International Seminar on “Consumer Rights Protection”

Uttara University and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh jointly organized an International Seminar on ‘Consumer Rights Protection’ on 12 April 2017 at the Uttara University Auditorium (House-7, Road-16, Sector-4, Uttara, Dhaka-1230). Mr. Kazi Reazul Hoque, Chairman, National Human Rights Commission, was present as Chief Guest of the Seminar.

Professor Dr. M. Azizur Rahman, Vice Chancellor of Uttara University, presided over the seminar. In his speech, Dr. Rahman, the seminar Chair, mentioned, ‘As a consumer, I always buy products following the instruction mentioned on the label of the products’.

The seminar was graced by some renowned personalities namely Professor Dr. Eaysmin Ara Lekha, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Uttara University; Mr. Abul Hossain Mian, Member, Bangladesh Competition Commission and former Director General, Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection; Dr. D K Mirsta (ONGC Subir Raha Chair Professor on Corporate Governance and Senior Professor and Director, Institute of Public Enterprise, Hyderabad, India); Mr. Md. Shafiqul Islam Laskar, Director General (Additional Director), Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection; Emeritus Professor Dr. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, former Vice-Chancellor, Assam University, India.

Prof. Akhter Hussain, Chairman, Department of Public Administration, University of Dhaka; Mr. Md. Siddiqur Rahman, President, Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA); Professor Dr. Taslima Monsoor, Former Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka; Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam, Dean, School of Business, Uttara University, were present as Discussants at the seminar.

Inaugural Speech was given by Professor Dr.  ASM Shahabuddin, Convener of the Seminar Organizing Committee and Chairman, Department of Business Administration, Uttara University. Among the others, honb’le Treasurer, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Deans of different Faculties, Chairmen of different Departments, teachers, students and employees of Uttara University and Members of the National Consumer Rights Protection, were also present at the Seminar.

The eminent educationists, researchers and experts from Bangladesh and India illustrated various significant issues regarding the consumer rights protection and consumer rights law from different perspectives in the seminar which will help developing consciousness among us. The discussants also emphasized that if the awareness builds up among the consumers, the vendors and manufacturers will be obligated to deliver quality products and services to the consumers.
