We heartily welcome you to the Department of English at Uttara University, arguably the premier academic destination in the country for students interested in studying English. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs—BA (Hons) in English, MA in English Literature, and MA in ELT—that cover various aspects of the English language, linguistics, and literature. Under the School of Arts and Social Sciences umbrella, our English programs are rooted in liberal-humanist tradition, artistic and literary values, critical and theoretical reasoning, and philosophical viewpoints. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM

Undergraduate

BA (Hons) in English

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English provides a strong background in the study of English. The program stresses literary analysis, diversity, critical thinking, and written and oral communication skills through rigorous literature, composition, language and linguistics, and communication studies. The Bachelor of Arts in English is a four-year program of 8 (eight) semesters. Students will be required to complete 141 credits comprising 45 courses (135 credits) and 4 (four) Viva-Voce (6 credits). Courses are designed to develop an understanding of language, culture and society, with special emphasis on various theoretical literature approaches.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Read closely in a variety of forms, styles, structures, and modes, and articulate the value of close reading in the study of literature, philosophy, creative writing, or rhetoric;
  • Show familiarity with major literary works, genres, periods, and critical approaches to British, American, and World Literature;
  • Write clearly, effectively, and creatively, and adjust writing style appropriately to the content, the context, and nature of the subject;
  • Develop and carry out research projects, and locate, evaluate, organize, and incorporate information effectively;
  • Demonstrate the capacity to speak clearly, read perceptively, listen comprehensively and think critically;
  • Have fundamental understanding of the basic nature, branches and history of linguistic inquiry and apply the principles of teaching into practices.

The goal of the program is to help students develop knowledge and language skills necessary to be successful students and members of society. This can be done most effectively by meeting the following objectives:

PEO 1 : to develop proficiency in the English language, and reach a level of proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening;

PEO 2 : to develop knowledge of theories of language and how theories relate to the daily use of language;

PEO 3 : to read, interpret and analyze literary texts and linguistic situations in light of their historical contexts bringing in various theoretical and critical approaches;

PEO 4 : to conduct and disseminate research in the fields of literary studies and language studies;

PEO 5 : to work together with others towards creating a more inclusive, egalitarian and just society.

Graduate Programs

MA in English Literature

The Master of Arts (MA) in EReadReadsh Literature aims to deepen students' passion for literature while developing the rigorous specialist skills essential for postgraduate-level research. The program is open to graduates holding either a 4-year BA in English degree or a 3-year Bachelor's in English or from other disciplines, with additional foundation courses required for the latter group. Offered in two modes, Coursework and mixed method, the MA program's duration ranges from one to three years, depending on the mode of study. Students with a 4-year BA in English must complete either 41 credits (by Coursework) or 40 credits (by Mixed-mode), while those with a 3-year BA must complete either 64 credits (by Mixed-mode) or 65 credits (by Coursework).
