To produce the graduates to meet the challenges in job markets of Physics through providing quality education and imparting practical knowledge with leadership qualities by maintaining harmonious relations among the four departments.

Department of Physics aims to teach the students the theoretical concept of natural laws and their practical implementations.

Department of Physics offers 2 different types of M.Sc. in Physics programs: Final and 2 years. This Department has 09 faculty members considering guest teachers. More than 50 students are pursuing M.Sc. degree in this Department.

Overview of the Department:

Physics encompasses the study of universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles. It is crucial to understanding the world around, inside and beyond us. It is the most basic and fundamental science that challenges our imagination with concepts likes relativity and string theory and leads to great discoveries like computers and LASERs, which in turn accelerate the advancements in technologies such as medical physics and engineering, environmental conservation and production of renewable & nonrenewable energy, information and communication technology, space science and technology for betterment of human lives. The Department of Physics of Uttara University was established in the year of 2004 considering the need for expanding higher education with affordable tuition in the country.

Uttara University has rightly apprehended the urge of the students who were looking for the avenue of higher studies in Physics and began to offer the M.Sc. (Final and two years) in Physics program in its city campus for the first time within the private universities. The Department is very rich with 09 faculty members (including guest teachers) having postgraduate degree with Ph. D and with large number of research publications. Some of the faculties are engaged in supervising M. Phil and Ph. D. students of public universities and produced good number of Ph. Ds in Physics. Currently there are more than 45 graduate students in this Department. Near about 1000 students obtained the postgraduate degree (M. Sc.) in Physics from this Department who are now playing important roles home and abroad. The government has encouraged introducing higher studies on basic science in the private universities. Uttara University has become the pioneer in the country in this respect by introducing graduate program in Physics (M.Sc. Final & 2 years) and still continuing to be the only private university of Bangladesh where graduate program in physics is being offered.

The authority of the university is considering to further expand the curriculum of Physics by introducing the 4 year bachelor programs in Physics. It is anticipated that the Physics Department will soon introduce the graduate program leading to Ph. D. if the government encourages pursuing such program.

Objectives of the Department:

The Department is running its activities and moving forward with the following objectives:

  • 1. To facilitate graduates to acquire the analytical knowledge of nature through constructing its mathematical models and experiments; and to convert this knowledge into practical, intellectual and transferable skills required for the advancements of the society.
  • 2. To provide an atmosphere for the faculty members and staffs so that, they can enhance their required capabilities in quality teaching, original research, innovative works and community services.
  • 3. To establish the industrial connection in order to spread the gathered knowledge to address the burning issues of the industry as well as to promote the further industrial advancements.
  • 4. To produce knowledgeable and noble graduates who are really essential for all spheres of the society.

Programs offered:

i. M. Sc. in Physics (Final):
     Masters of Science in Physics degree is offered for the students of B. Sc and Diploma background.
ii. M. Sc. in Physics (2 Years):
     Masters of Science in Physics degree is offered for the students of B. Sc and Diploma background.

Overview of the programs:

The Master of Physics program is a terminal professional program designed to strengthen the student's physics background, and enhance his/her opportunities for employment as a physicist or in physics education. The program should normally be completed in one year and two years. The courses should be selected in consultation with the student's advisor to best meet the student's professional objectives. It is intended to give the student direct experience with real physics problems, and a chance to demonstrate his or her ability to carry a project through to completion.

Objectives of the programs:

The program objectives are:
  • 1. To develop an in-depth and specialized knowledge of physical phenomena.
  • 2. To create the ability to successfully demonstrate analytic cognitive knowledge in physics.
  • 3. To prepare the students to continue studies in a Ph.D. program, enter a professional school, or enter the job sector as a technical professional.
  • 4. To improve the fundamental concepts and advanced techniques of physics and scientific methodology.
  • 5. To enhance intellectual, computational, experimental, communication and analytical skills of the students.

Admission Eligibility

  • B. Sc. Honors or M.Sc. Preliminary in Physics/ Applied Physics/Mathematics /Chemistry

Departments currently research topics:

  • Bridging poetry with the science of Climate Change (Jointly conducted by School of Environment and Industrial Engineering, Department of Bangla and Department of Physics)
  • Land cover changes and impacts on land-use, health and livelihood (Jointly conducted by School of Environment and Industrial Engineering, and Department of Physics)
  • Variability of sea surface temperature (SST) and its impact on the intensity of tropical cyclones
  • Monsoon variability and tele-connection links
  • Study of monsoon activity using MM5 NWP model with high resolution in collaboration with Jahangir Nagar Universiy
  • Study of tropical cyclone tracks and intensity over the Bay of Bengal and effects of Sunderban forest on those having landfalls in this area ( In collaboration with Jahangirnagar University)

Course Duration: 1 year

 

Degree requirements:

The M. Sc. in Physics degree requirements will be as follows:

Category-I:Completion of 72 credit hours courses in two years (Part-I & Part-II) for those students who have B.Sc. (Pass) degree

Category-II: Completion of 36 credit hours courses in one year (Part-II) for those students who have B.Sc. (Hons.) 3 year or M.Sc. (Preliminary) degree.

Passing of all courses individually and maintaining a minimum CGPA of 2.25(in a scale of 4).
