Antara Roy Chowdhury, Md. Masudul Hasan and Md. Aminul Haque

In under a decade, Bangladesh has developed a Quality Assurance Framework for higher education, establishing standards for universities to comply with. The framework implements national qualification protocols, which include internal self-assessment and external quality assurance measures. This study examines the impact of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) framework on English departments in Bangladeshi public and private universities. Through a case study approach and qualitative data collection techniques, 15 faculty members from four private and two public universities were interviewed to determine how the IQAC framework has influenced the quality of teaching and learning. The findings suggest that both public and private universities have modified or plan to modify their curricula, syllabi, and course descriptions to ensure high-quality education and bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace.

An Analysis of the Needs of English Language of the Students of National University
Shorna Akter and Minhajul Abedin

This research study aimed to investigate the extent to which English courses at the National University of Bangladesh cater to the needs of learners. Although the university introduced English as an introductory course for several first-year honors programs and acknowledged the value of learning the language, research indicates that the English language curriculum may not have been created with learners' needs in mind. A small-scale study was carried out to address this problem using a mixed-method approach, which included a questionnaire and focus group discussions with students and teachers. The study found substantial gaps between the course content described in the syllabus and the needs of the learners. The study suggests that the English language curriculum be reviewed and revised to ensure that it meets the needs of the students, which will ultimately help them become more proficient in the language. The National University of Bangladesh needs to know the study's results to improve its students' English language proficiency and support their success in both academic and professional settings.

Treatment of Violence in Lessing’s The Grass is Singing: A Psychoanalytic Reading
Prof. Haspia Bashirullah and Ishrat Zahan

This paper explores the complicated mind and the psychoanalytic perspective of the concept of violence of a conflicted young white lady, Mary Turner, a white farmer's wife, in Doris Lessing's masterpiece The Grass is Singing. This paper examines the portrayal of an individual's suffering in a challenging world, referring to Doris Lessing's exploration of the harsh realities of life. The study has successfully portrayed the character of Mary as a puzzled and violent individual who shows her wild detestation towards her black servant, Moses. The novelist has tried to juxtapose the individual against society and pictured the conflicts of the individual struggling to survive in the hostile world. Through a qualitative study, this study investigates the novelist's deep concern with her insightful psychological analysis of the violence of Mary Turner, whose repressed feelings change her into a feeble-hearted, sometimes desperate, and violent mistress. As the study traces the reasons for her violence, like her unhappy marriage, harsh environment, repressed desires, a failed career, racial hostility, and strong sense of dominance over servants, the protagonist Mary Turner is discovered as a broken-hearted lady depending on her black servant and disintegrates in the long run to her sufferings. The textual analysis of The Grass is Singing provides the theoretical perspective of psychoanalysis of a white colonizer's violence and portrays her struggle to survive among utmost conflicts.

What is ‘Science’ in Social Science? An Epistemological Investigation
Soumya Choudhury and Md. Samzir Ahmed

The word science refers to a specific mode of inquiry in seeking knowledge. Thus, “What is ‘science’ in social science” is a question of the status of science or social science and the nature of knowledge itself. If social science claims the scientificity in its approach to knowledge, their difference becomes only a matter of difference in their distinct object of study. Further, this paper wants to argue that the difference between them is not only a matter of difference in objects of study or degrees of reliability of knowledge but also a matter of difference-in-kind. Thus, the notion of ‘science’ in social science merely denotes the aspiration of social science to produce as reliable and accurate knowledge as natural sciences.

Imtiaz Ahmed Sajal & Syeda Afroza Zerin

The Rampal power project in Bangladesh, a joint venture between India's National Thermal Power Corporation and Bangladesh Power Development Board, has faced opposition due to its potential adverse impact on the Sundarbans, a UNESCO-declared world heritage site and Ramsar site. The Project's environmental impact has raised concerns among environmentalists, civil society, and the public. However, the Government remains committed to implementing the Project, raising questions about the interplay between environmental protection and foreign investment protection. This research examines the Rampal power project's ramifications in the complex relationship between ecological legal provisions and investment law. It explores the legal frameworks governing the Project and analyzes the implications of the India-Bangladesh Bilateral Investment Treaty on Bangladesh's ability to withdraw from the Project in case of adverse environmental effects. This research is relevant to international environmental law, investment law, and domestic legal regimes and can contribute to the ongoing discourse on balancing environmental protection and foreign investment protection.

Exploring the Representation of Bangladeshi Culture and History in Bangla Cinema: A Study of the Years 2000-2010
Md.Mahbobor Rahaman

Bangla Cinema is a medium of representation for Bangladesh to a worldwide audience. The present research investigates the representation of Bangladeshi culture, traditions, politics, and history in the cinema produced between 2000 and 2010. The study employs a data modeling instrument relying on five fundamental indicators to evaluate the data. The study employed a mixed methods methodology utilizing a cross-sectional design. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and observations. A stratified random sampling method was employed to select a sample size of ten Bangla movies from the past decade. Out of the ten movies, 80% were focused on social issues or romance, while 10% of them were centered on politics, and the remaining 10% were based on other themes. During this period, it was observed that most of the movies could have accurately depicted Bangladesh's culture, tradition, politics, or history. Regrettably, the standard of Bangla cinema during the current decade has been substandard owing to the creation of many low-grade films, a significant proportion of which were deemed indecent, reducing the number of patrons frequenting cinema halls in Bangladesh. Consequently, the Bangla film industry encountered significant obstacles. The research findings suggest that the Bangla film industry encounters certain constraints in growth, advertising, and publicity compared to other global film sectors. Therefore, the imperative is made for the government and other relevant cinema-related entities to revitalize and safeguard the nation's esteemed and rich cinema sector.

Aunopama Afroz

Muhammad Atiqur Rahman
