Uttara University is a centre of excellence for higher education, situated in the capital city of Dhaka in Bangladesh. In 2003, Uttara University initiated its journey with the hands of DAR Trust pursuant to the Private University Act 1992. Regular classes started in 2003 at the first campus which was located in Sector 6, Uttara Model Town, Dhaka. The university was housed in a dozen of individual campuses spanning across Dhaka city and were located in Uttara, Dhanmondi, Farmgate and Mirpur towns. These campuses were later consolidated and UU relocated to its state-of-the-art permanent campus on 1st July 2023 in greater Uttara. In the year 2024, it had secured a place for the first time in international ranking. The university offers several graduate and undergraduate programs through its five schools and fourteen departments. Over the years, this university has evolved into a comprehensive institution that provides a variety of research opportunities. Its motto, "Excellence in Higher Education and Research," has earned it recognition on an international scale. The quality of education provided by Uttara University is reflected in the employment placements of its graduates and in its research output. In this cosmopolitan smart-city campus, students have the opportunity to demonstrate their potential to face global challenges in the national and international labour market. The primary goal of this institution is to facilitate the professional and personal development of its students. These students are consistently nurtured and assisted by the university in their preparation for challenging corporate environments, as well as in the enhancement of their professional and rational abilities. The medium of instruction for all academic programs at Uttara University is English. The academic year of the university incorporates two semesters of four and half months each and a short inter-session semester. Uttara University is an independent private organisation with its own governing body known as the board of trustees.
Uttara University was established in 2003 under the Dr M Azizur Rahman (DAR) Trust which is a non-profit and non-political entity founded in the year 1997. It has been funded and led by eminent educationist, economist, renowned entrepreneur and Freedom Fighter Dr M Azizur Rahman, and was incorporated in accordance with the guidelines of the Private University Act 1992 (revised in 2010) and by the instructions of the Ministry of Education and University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh. A former Economic Advisor to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Prof. Dr. M Azizur Rahman is the chief sponsor of the trust. Due to the philanthropic subsidy and gratitude of the Founder, UU has been able to offer the country’s most desirable degree programs. His envision of a great educational voyage has changed lives and communities crossing borders. He is also the founder Vice-Chancellor of Uttara University. A PhD in Economics from Vanderbilt University, a Nobel Laureate institution in the United States of America, Dr. Rahman is capable of bringing innovation to national education, which is advantageous for students who aspire to establish a sustainable career in the contemporary global marketplace. Dr. Rahman established a remarkable number of educational institutions in Bangladesh where meritorious and ardent students are benefited by their merit with qualitative ingredients through innovative programs. As he is also a columnist, he employs this approach to address urgent national and international concerns for a broad audience. Dr. Rahman has authored numerous publications that have been published both domestically and internationally in indexed journals. The Chancellor of Uttara University is the Honourable President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
The Honourable Vice-Chancellor, who serves as the University's Chief Academic and Executive Officer, serves as the Head of the Syndicate and Academic Council. The Vice-Chancellor is supported by the Pro Vice-Chancellor and a Treasurer in order to enhance the appropriate administrative and academic activities which are governed by the Board of Trustees. On the recommendation of the UU Trustee Board, the VC, Pro VC and Treasurer have been appointed by the Honourable Chancellor and President of the country. In accordance with the Private University Act 2010, the Vice-Chancellor is obligated to oversee the administration and management of academic and administrative affairs by adhering to the policies and guidelines established by the UU Trustee Board.
The first Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Uttara University was Prof. Dr. Eaysmin Ara Lekha, who is currently the Vice-Chancellor of the institution. She was designated Pro-Vice-Chancellor by the then Hon'ble Chancellor of this University in recognition of her meritorious services and experience in the field of education. Previously, she served as the Dean of the School of Education and Physical Education and the Professor and Head of the Department of Education prior to her appointment as Pro-Vice-Chancellor. A PhD alumnus of Jadavpur University, India and Doctorate of Literature from Ranchi University, India, she is also the author of numerous books and founder of few educational institutions in Bangladesh. Sabira Rouf College, is one of the institutions that Dr. Lekha has established as a patron of learning.
